MoreOverview
Qualcomm Incorporated is a $10.4 billion wireless telecommunications research and development company based in San Diego, California. Formed in 1985, the company has become a world leader in next-generation mobile technologies, developing and delivering innovative digital wireless communications products and services based on CDMA and other advanced technologies. Its solutions serve enterprises in a wide range of industries in markets around the world.
Barriers
Prior to 1999, Qualcomm operated in a decentralized, silo-based environment with diverse business and technology solutions across dozens of different site locations. This diversity created operational risk, limited the ability to scale for growth, and resulted in higher business costs associated with the purchase, training, and maintenance of the company’s diverse solutions. The heterogeneous environment also presented challenges to data availability, backup success rates, and risk management.
The Solution
Qualcomm consolidated its information technology (IT) operations and standardized on the following Symantec products across segments of its data center infrastructure: Veritas Storage Foundation to help manage rapid data growth; Symantec NetBackup and Symantec OpsCenter Analytics to streamline backup and recovery; Symantec NetBackup PureDisk for remote office backup; Veritas Cluster Server to better manage application availability; and Veritas CommandCentral Storage to increase visibility into the storage environment. To augment its IT staff, Qualcomm contracted with Symantec Consulting Services, Symantec Business Critical Services, and Symantec Residency Services at various points during the IT transformation. Qualcomm also participates in the Symantec Elite Program that consolidates enterprise licensing, service, and support agreements.
Benefits
A Total Operational and Economic Impact (TOEI™) analysis by Alchemy Group found that Symantec solutions helped Qualcomm realize tangible business value. Actual and projected savings of nearly $19 million are quantified for the period of January 2003 through December 2012.
This TOEI™ was jointly developed by Qualcomm senior IT executives and Alchemy Group. To ensure the integrity of this analysis, the assumptions and formulas were audited by an independent finance and accounting firm.
